ToggleA lot of business owners think: "I'll just use ChatGPT for my content instead of hiring an SEO consultant."
I understand the logic. ChatGPT is free or cheap. SEO consultancy costs real money. Why not just do it yourself?
Here's the problem: ChatGPT writes articles. Writing is just a tiny piece of the whole process.
Let me show you what actually goes into creating content that ranks on Google, appears in AI Overviews, and generates qualified traffic to your website.
The Real Work Behind SEO Content
1. Keyword Research
You need to identify keywords with decent search volume, manageable competition, and genuine commercial intent. This means using professional tools like Ahrefs (from £99/month) or Semrush (from £119/month) to analyse search volume, difficulty scores, and ranking opportunities.
ChatGPT can't do this. You'd have to do it manually - and without experience, you'll likely target the wrong keywords entirely.
2. SERP Analysis
Before writing anything, you need to study the top 10 pages already ranking for your target keyword. What structure works? How comprehensive should the content be? What subtopics does Google expect? What makes one page outrank another?
ChatGPT can't browse the web and analyse competitors. You'd have to do it yourself - and know what to look for.
3. Content Structure
Based on that research, you need to build an outline with strategic heading hierarchy designed to match what Google rewards. Not guessing. Based on what's actually working in the SERPs right now.
ChatGPT can write whatever you ask for. But it won't know what Google wants for that specific keyword unless you already know how to instruct it properly.
4. SEO Optimisation
The article needs optimal length, natural keyword integration (not stuffed, not thin), strong readability scores, and strategic keyword placement in headings, introduction, and conclusion.
ChatGPT writes well. But it doesn't optimise for SEO unless you know exactly what to ask for - which requires SEO expertise in the first place.
5. Internal and External Links
Quality content includes links to your existing pages (helping Google understand your site structure and topical authority) plus authoritative external sources (building credibility and supporting your arguments).
ChatGPT can't access your website to identify relevant internal linking opportunities. You'd have to add them manually - assuming you know which pages to link to and why.
6. Images with Alt Text
Relevant images improve engagement and dwell time. Proper alt text supports accessibility and image search visibility.
ChatGPT doesn't create images. You'd have to source them, optimise file sizes, add descriptive alt text, and upload them yourself.
7. Technical SEO
Meta descriptions, Open Graph tags, proper HTML formatting, schema markup - none of this is optional if you want modern search performance.
ChatGPT doesn't handle any of this. You'd have to implement it in your CMS manually, assuming you understand what's required.
8. Publishing and Quality Control
Getting the article live on your website with proper formatting, working links, optimised images, and correct technical implementation.
ChatGPT doesn't connect to WordPress or Shopify. You'd have to copy, paste, format, troubleshoot, and publish everything manually.
Here's What It Actually Comes Down To
Option 1: Use ChatGPT Yourself
- You still need to conduct keyword research (30"-60" per article)
- You still need to analyse the SERPs (1 hour)
- You still need to optimise, format, add links, and source images (1 hour)
- You still need to handle technical SEO and publish it yourself (1 hour)
- Repeat 5-10 times per month = 20–30+ hours of work
- And that assumes you know what you're doing. Most people don't - so add learning time, mistakes, and poor results to that estimate.
Option 2: Work with an Experienced SEO Consultant
- Keyword research: Done
- SERP analysis: Done
- Content strategy: Done
- SEO optimisation: Done
- Images, links, technical SEO: Done
- Publishing and quality assurance: Done
- Time required from you: Minimal - just approvals and feedback
The Bottom Line
Your time is worth more than doing this yourself. Significantly more.
ChatGPT is a tool. A powerful one. But it's not a substitute for strategic SEO expertise, competitive research, technical implementation, and content that's actually built to rank.
If you want content that drives qualified traffic from Google, appears in AI search results, and converts visitors into customers, you need more than AI-generated text. You need someone who understands search intent, knows how to outperform competitors, and has the technical knowledge to make it all work.
That's what I do. And I've been doing it for over 14 years across 100+ clients.
If you're serious about SEO that delivers measurable results - not just published content - let's talk about what's actually possible for your business.
